ATM Removed by Tow Truck in Lake Forest

If you went to get some cash out this morning at your local Chase Bank ATM in Lake Forest this morning, you may have noticed that you couldn’t. The ATM had been stolen just before 5 a.m. this morning.

At least two men were involved in the robbery, using a flat-bed truck, a tow truck and a Chevy Silverado truck. According to Lt. Jim England of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the suspects first used a cable and the tow truck to try to pull the ATM out of the ground. When the cable snapped, they went to Plan B, which was to ram it with the Chevy truck. The suspects were then able to load the ATM onto the flat-bed truck and drive away.

Investigators are trying to find out how much cash was inside the ATM when it was stolen, and working to retrieve video in order to identify the thieves.

Is this a sign of the times? Is our economy so bad that people are resorting to theft and robbery to provide for their families during the holidays? Or was this a mini-protest against the big banks and their mismanagement of the mortgage industry? (And if so, they should have gone for Bank of America, especially if they were Latino or African-American.)

We’re aware that people steal and rob for many reasons, including addiction, but at this time of year, we are wondering if this is more about desperation. What do you think? Do you feel that the economy is recovering, or that it is still floundering? Will this kind of crime keep proliferating if the economy doesn’t improve? Your comments are appreciated.
